Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, room temperature, plus more, to taste, for greasing the pan
  • 1 cup all purpose-flour, plus more, to taste, for dusting the pan
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 1/2 cups dark cherries, pitted and halved
  • whipped cream, to taste, for serving

Directions

Step 1 -Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Step 2 -Use the extra butter to lightly grease a 9-inch square pan. Line it with parchment paper and grease it with more of the extra butter, then dust it with the extra flour.

Step 3 -In a medium bowl, add the remaining 1 cup of the flour, the cocoa powder, the baking powder, the baking soda, and the salt and whisk to combine.

Step 4 -In a large bowl, add the sugar and the remaining 1/2 cup of the butter and beat with an electric mixer until it is light and fluffy.

Step 5 -Add the egg and the vanilla to the butter-sugar mixture and beat with the electric mixer until it is incorporated, about 1 minute.

Step 6 -Alternate adding the flour mixture and the buttermilk to the butter mixture and mix after each addition, until the cake batter is well combined.

Step 7 -Pour the cake batter into the prepared pan and sprinkle with the chocolate chips.

Step 8 -Bake the cake until it is not quite cooked but starting to set, about 25 minutes.

Step 9 -Top the cake with the cherry halves, then bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 15 minutes.

Step 10 -Slice the cake and top with the whipped cream.

Step 11 -Serve.
