Ingredients
- 1 (8-ounce) can large, flaky biscuits
- 1/2 pound ground breakfast sausage
- 3 tablespoons flour
- 2 1/2 cups milk, plus more, to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more, to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, plus more, to taste
Directions
Step 1 -Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
Step 2 -Prepare a small casserole dish with cooking spray and set it aside.
Step 3 -Cut each biscuit into quarters.
Step 4 -Layer 1/2 of the biscuit pieces in the prepared pan.
Step 5 -Bake the biscuits until they just start to turn golden, about 10 minutes.
Step 6 -Heat a heavy skillet over medium-high heat and add the breakfast sausage.
Step 7 -Brown the sausage until fully-cooked, about 5-7 minutes.
Step 8 -Sprinkle the cooked sausage with the flour.
Step 9 -Stir the flour into the sausage until completely absorbed, about 1-2 minutes.
Step 10 -Lower the heat to medium and stir the sausage-flour mixture frequently, about 3-5 minutes.
Step 11 -Add 2 1/2 cups of the milk and stir to combine.
Step 12 -Season with 1/2 teaspoon of the salt and 1/2 teaspoon of the pepper.
Step 13 -Continue to stir until the mixture comes to a slight boil.
Step 14 -Taste and adjust with more of the salt and more of the pepper as needed.
Step 15 -Add more of the milk if the gravy is too thick.
Step 16 -Pour the gravy over the cooked biscuits in the casserole dish.
Step 17 -Layer the remaining uncooked biscuit pieces over the gravy.
Step 18 -Place the casserole dish on a baking sheet and bake until the top is golden-brown and cooked through, about 20-25 minutes.
Step 19 -Serve.
