About
What happens when an apple pie, a berry pie, and a cobbler come together to make a dessert that truly defines the harvest season? The Fall Dessert Bake, of course! The filling is pure ooey-gooey jammy goodness, with tart apples and sweet berries sweetened with brown sugar and a touch of cinnamon. Meanwhile, the crust is an extra crunchy buttermilk treat, loaded up with almonds for nuttiness and an extra crisp sensation. Indulge in the Fall Dessert Bake and you'll find yourself fully immersed in that true autumn feeling!
Ingredients
- 6 large Gala apples, peeled and sliced
- 2 (6-ounce) containers fresh blackberries
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest, plus 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (from 1 lemon)
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter
- 2/3 cup whole buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons almonds, sliced
- lightly sweetened whipped cream, optional, to taste, for serving
Directions
Step 1 -Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
Step 2 -Coat a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
Step 3 -In a large bowl, add the apples, the blackberries, the brown sugar, the cornstarch, the cinnamon, the lemon zest, and the lemon juice and toss gently to combine.
Step 4 -Spoon the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
Step 5 -In a medium bowl, add the flour, the granulated sugar, the baking powder, and the salt and whisk to combine.
Step 6 -Grate the butter into the flour mixture using the large holes of a box grater, then toss to combine.
Step 7 -Add the buttermilk to the flour mixture and stir until just combined and the dry ingredients are moistened.
Step 8 -Drop 8 (1/4-cup) scoops of the dough over the filling in the baking dish.
Step 9 -Sprinkle the bake with the almonds.
Step 10 -Bake, covering the bake with aluminum foil halfway through to prevent overbrowning, until the filling is bubbly and the topping is browned, about 45-55 minutes.
Step 11 -Let the bake cool for about 15 minutes.
Step 12 -Serve with the sweetened whipped cream.
