These are Harvest Favorite Turnovers and, by coincidence, happen to our favorite turnovers as well! Within each golden-brown and buttery puff pastry is a flood of jammy, cinnamon-infused apples, crunchy pecans, and a luscious cream cheese filling. It's perfect for enjoying the fall evenings or as a snack for apple-picking! Autumn has never tasted better than with Harvest Favorite Turnovers!
Ingredients
- For the cheese filling:
- 6 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 2 teaspoons milk
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- For the apple filling:
- 3/4 pound Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon water
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 1/2 cup caramel bits, such as Kraft® Caramel Bits
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 1/2 ounces pecans, chopped
- For the crust:
- flour, to taste, for dusting the work surface
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1 (17.3-ounce, 2-count) package puff pastry
Directions
Step 1 -In a small bowl, add the cream cheese, the milk, the egg yolk, 1 teaspoon of the vanilla, and 3 tablespoons of the granulated sugar and using an electric handheld mixer, beat until smooth and combined.
Step 2 -Set the cream cheese mixture aside.
Step 3 -In a medium saucepan, add the apples, the remaining granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon of the water, the cinnamon, and the remaining vanilla and stir to combine.
Step 4 -Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook the apple mixture, while stirring often, until the apples have softened, about 5 minutes.
Step 5 -Add the caramel bits and the salt to the apple mixture and stir to combine.
Step 6 -Reduce the heat to low and cook the apple mixture, while stirring frequently, until the caramel has melted.
Step 7 -Add the pecans to the apple mixture and stir to combine.
Step 8 -Transfer the apple mixture from the heat and set it aside.
Step 9 -Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
Step 10 -Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
Step 11 -Dust a work surface with the flour.
Step 12 -In a small bowl, add the egg and the remaining water and whisk to combine.
Step 13 -Unroll 1 sheet of the puff pastry on the floured work surface and using a rolling pin, roll it into a 12x12-inch square.
Step 14 -Cut the puff pastry square into 4 equally-sized squares.
Step 15 -Repeat the rolling and cutting process with the remaining puff pastry sheet.
Step 16 -Divide the cream cheese mixture evenly between the puff pastry squares, placing each portion in the center of each square.
Step 17 -Top the cream cheese mixture on each puff pastry square with an even amount of the apple mixture.
Step 18 -Fold each piece of the puff pastry in half, sealing the edges to keep the filling inside.
Step 19 -Brush the tops the turnovers evenly with the egg wash.
Step 20 -Transfer the turnovers to the prepared baking sheets.
Step 21 -Bake the turnovers until they are puffed and golden-brown, about 14-16 minutes.
Step 22 -Allow the turnovers to cool.
Step 23 -Serve.
