Grits are already one of the more flexible dishes around; you can make them sweet or savory, fill them with bacon or serve them with eggs or drizzle them with syrup... whatever your heart desires. For us, we desire to see the grits packed with cheese and butter, something the Southern Cheese Grits Casserole can provide! The grits are as tender as you could ever hope for, the cheese is melty and infused throughout, and everything is rich and joyous. Southern Cheese Grits Casserole is the type of meal that makes the South famous for its cooking, and you can bring it home right now!
Ingredients
- 4 cups milk
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 cup quick-cooking grits, uncooked
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten
- 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, grated
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, grated
Directions
Step 1 -Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 2 -Lightly grease a 7x11-inch baking dish.
Step 3 -In a large saucepan over medium-high heat, bring the milk to just a boil.
Step 4 -Gradually whisk the butter and the grits into the milk.
Step 5 -Reduce the heat to low and simmer, whisking constantly, until the grits are done, about 5-7 minutes.
Step 6 -Transfer the saucepan from the heat.
Step 7 -Stir the eggs, the cheddar cheese, the salt, and the pepper into the grits.
Step 8 -Pour the grits mixture into the prepared baking dish.
Step 9 -Sprinkle the top of the grits with the parmesan.
Step 10 -Bake until set, about 35-40 minutes.
Step 11 -Serve.
