We love this Wink-Wink Cake! It's so fluffy, moist, and creamy! Plus, the flavors of the sweet, vanilla, yellow cake hugging the rich, creamy filling makes us think of a (wink-wink) certain pre-packaged golden sponge cake which gives us a healthy dose of nostalgia. But also, it's extremely easy to whip up, so get ready to have this Wink-Wink Cake around quite a bit! Life is about to be a little sweeter because of it!

Ingredients

  • 1 box yellow cake mix, plus the ingredients called for on the box
  • 5 tablespoons flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions

Step 1 -Preheat the oven according to the instructions on the cake mix box.

Step 2 -Grease one 9x13-inch pan with cooking spray and line one 9x13-inch pan with parchment paper.

Step 3 -In a large bowl, prepare the yellow cake according to the package directions.

Step 4 -Evenly divide the batter between the prepared pans.

Step 5 -Bake the cakes until a toothpick inserted into the center of each cake comes out clean, about 15 minutes.

Step 6 -Let the cakes cool completely.

Step 7 -In a saucepan over medium heat, add the flour and the milk, whisking to combine.

Step 8 -Bring the milk mixture to a boil and cook, stirring constantly, until it is thick.

Step 9 -Transfer the milk mixture from the heat and let it cool.

Step 10 -In a large bowl, add the shortening, the butter, the sugar, the salt, and the vanilla and beat with an electric hand mixer until smooth.

Step 11 -Add the milk mixture to the shortening mixture and beat until it is smooth.

Step 12 -Transfer the cake from the parchment-lined pan onto a cooling rack. Peel off and discard the parchment paper.

Step 13 -Spread the filling over the cake that is still in the pan and then top with the remaining cake.

Step 14 -Slice and serve.
