Ingredients
- 4 links Italian turkey sausage, casings removed
- 1/2 medium onion, finely diced
- 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup frozen spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley
- 1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil
- 2 cups canned crushed tomatoes
- 3 cups low-sodium chicken broth
- 5 cups ziti
- 1 1/2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
- fresh basil leaves, to taste, for garnish
Directions
Step 1 -In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the sausage and cook, while crumbling with a wooden spoon, until it is browned, about 2-3 minutes.
Step 2 -Add the onions and the garlic to sausage and cook until they have softened, about 2 minutes.
Step 3 -Add the spinach, the red pepper flakes, the salt, the dried parsley, the dried oregano, the dried basil, the crushed tomatoes, and the chicken broth to the sausage mixture and stir until it is combined.
Step 4 -Stir the ziti into the sausage mixture and bring it to a simmer.
Step 5 -Reduce the heat to medium. Cover the skillet and cook the ziti mixture, stirring often, until pasta is tender, about 12-15 minutes.
Step 6 -Uncover the skillet and evenly sprinkle the ziti mixture with the cheese.
Step 7 -Cover the skillet and let the ziti mixture sit until the cheese has melted.
Step 8 -Serve the ziti mixture garnished with the fresh basil leaves.
