Switch up what you think pizza should look like! These Pizza Turnovers do a little rearranging by putting your favorite toppings, like melty cheese and tender veggies, on the inside. Yum! This way, you get more of that crispy, golden crust you love so much, and every single bite is ooey, gooey bliss! Pizza Turnovers really shake your snack up in the tastiest way!
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons fresh mushrooms, chopped
- 2 tablespoons green pepper, chopped
- 2 tablespoons onion, chopped
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 5 tablespoons tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons water, plus more, to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 cup part-skim mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 1 (15-ounce, 2-count) package refrigerated rolled pie crusts
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
Directions
Step 1 -Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.
Step 2 -Grease a baking sheet.
Step 3 -In a small saucepan over medium heat, add the mushrooms, the green peppers, the onions, and the butter and sauté until the veggies are tender.
Step 4 -Reduce the heat to medium-low. Add the tomato paste, 2 tablespoons of the water, the oregano, and the garlic powder to the veggie mixture and stir to combine.
Step 5 -Stir the cheese into the filling mixture and cook until it is melted. Transfer the saucepan from the heat.
Step 6 -Unroll the pie crusts onto a flat surface, then use a 3 1/2-inch biscuit or cookie cutter to cut the pie crusts into 7 dough circles for a total of 14 circles.
Step 7 -Place 1 teaspoon of the pizza filling in the center of each of the dough circles.
Step 8 -Evenly brush the edges of the each of the dough circles with the extra water. Fold each of the dough circles in half and use a fork to seal the edges.
Step 9 -Evenly brush the tops of each of the turnovers with the beaten egg.
Step 10 -Place the turnovers on the prepared baking sheet and bake until they are golden-brown, about 12-14 minutes.
Step 11 -Transfer the baking sheet from the oven and allow the turnovers to cool slightly.
Step 12 -Serve.
