About
Uncle J loved to throw together a good, old-fashioned fish fry for his friends and neighbors; he just loved sharing his crunchy, crispy golden-brown fillets with everyone. Making Uncle J's Beer-Battered Fish is like getting an invitation to one of these classic cookouts, except you can get the party started whenever you want! Infused with smoky, spicy Old Bay® seasoning and the sweet and savory flavor of cod, Uncle J's Beer-Battered Fish doesn't need tartar sauce to amaze your taste buds, although you're more than welcome to dip away! Have fun holding your own fish fry!
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more, to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
- 1 (12-ounce) bottle lager
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 2 pounds cod, cut into 12 pieces
- freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- vegetable oil, to taste
- lemon wedges, to taste, for serving
Directions
Step 1 -In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, 1 teaspoon of the salt, and the Old Bay seasoning.
Step 2 -Whisk in the lager and the egg.
Step 3 -Let the egg mixture sit for 10 minutes.
Step 4 -Dry the cod with paper towels.
Step 5 -Season the cod with the salt and the pepper.
Step 6 -In a large pot over medium heat, add 3 inches of the oil. Heat the oil to 375 degrees F.
Step 7 -Working in batches, coat the cod pieces in the batter and carefully drop them in the heated oil. Make sure to do this in batches to keep the oil from cooling too much, being careful to drop each piece in away from you.
Step 8 -Fry the cod, flipping each piece halfway through, until golden and the fish is cooked through at 145 degrees F internally, about 5-6 minutes.
Step 9 -Transfer the fish to a paper-towel-lined plate.
Step 10 -Season the fish immediately with the salt.
Step 11 -Serve with the lemon wedges.
